I am going to build a house – by myself – out of shipping containers. It is the most frightening prospect I have ever faced. Luckily I thrive on a healthy dose of pressure and fear, so I am naively excited about the whole project.
“Containers” for the moment is wrong. I have decided to build a small, off-grid cabin to test everything out, before I start on the main house in a couple of years. I am the proud, but slightly contract-weary, owner of a 1 hectare plot east of Pretoria. Besides the mammoth task of trying to build your own house using your own hands and begged and borrowed expertise, I also grow orchids and other indigenous plants, I teach at a high school, I love my cats and I am trying to live in such a way that I am more conscious of my environment and my impact on it.
